The Pittsburgh Pirates are looking to build on their success. after last year's second place finish in the National League Central Division and a surprise playoff berth. The 2013 season was the first time the Pirates had reached the playoffs since 1992, so fans are eager to see what changes may be in store for the coming year, and if they can emerge as contenders for the World Series. This Pittsburgh Pirates' team composition remains solid, with the core batting line-up led by Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Neil Walker, all of whom displayed consistent hitting power. McCutchen should continue to perform in 2014 hoping to match his .317 regular season average from last season, which with his center fielding, stands as one of the best overall performances in team history. Alvarez will again look to lead the team in home runs and RBI's, giving the Pirates a threat at the plate every game. The fielding talent is what one would expect from a playoff team, despite current changes at first base and right field, replacing players who departed in free agency. Although there have not been many significant signings in the off-season, a notable addition is pitcher Edinson Volquez who signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the team. Volquez may have big shoes to fill as last year's pitching work-horse, A.J. Burnett is still undecided and could leave via free agency. Closer Brad Lidge will return and try to duplicate his perfect 41 saves in 41 opportunities. Even without Burnett the Pirate's pitching staff is well rounded, logging the leagues third best ERA in 2013.The team is excited and optimistic to repeat their success in the 2014 season, and as McCutchen was quoted, 'Our actions will do the talking. Our determination will turn doubters into believers.' Pittsburgh Pirates fans are starting to believe, and look for their team to bring home the first World Series championship in 35 years.
